I had about 40 pages of Loving Frank left to read. It was around 6:30 in the morning, and my mom overslept for our daily walk.
“I guess I’ll read the ending before breakfast,” I thought.
Silly me.
I knew that Mamah Cheney was going to die an untimely death at the end of Loving Frank, but I didn’t know it was going to be so gruesome.
It seemed like things were really turning around for Mamah and Frank.
But suddenly …
An ax? To Mamah’s head? Doused with gasoline? Set on fire? While her children stood by? Frank’s out of town?
Isn’t it a little early for this?
My stomach started to churn. But it got worse, and I couldn’t stop reading.
After the murderer, a crazed employee on Mamah and Frank’s ranch, took out Mamah and her kids, he got six farmhands with an ax as they jumped out the only unlocked window in the burning house. Only two of them survived.
Frank came home to the charred bodies and a charred house.
And then it was breakfast time.
I couldn’t bear to eat my usual slice of peanut butter toast. I barely choked down a cup of coffee.
Across the kitchen table, my dad asked me how the book was coming.
“Dad! It was so gross! They all got axed! This guy, he–”
Dad got up from the table and left for work.
Smart move.
