Grandmaster Flash, one of the founding fathers of hip hop, tells his story in The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash: My Life, My Beats. He pioneered break-beat DJing in the 1970s, then the groundbreaking union of a DJ and five rappers as Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. The book is co-written by David Ritz, an award-winning music writer based in Los Angeles.
Even if they don’t know the name of the tune, people of a certain age will recognize the beats of “The Message” and be instantly transported back in time to a dance floor, probably with lots of flashing lights. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five was the first hip-hop group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Grandmaster Flash (Joseph Saddler) tells of his humble beginnings in South Bronx, rising to the heights of stardom, losing millions of dollars to his record label and cocaine addiction. He writes from a time when “keeping it real” was, well, real.
The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash, ISBN 978-0-7679-2475-7, went on sale Tuesday.
