Not exactly a how-to guide

By Alan Katz and illustrated by David Catrow

They say the best way to get over something that makes you uncomfortable is to just say it. Right out in the open. Just, put it out there and let the world see it.
So, here goes: Poopy, pee-pee, potty, poop, wee-wee.

There. I feel so much better.

In On Top of the Potty, author Alan Katz and illustrator David Catrow continue their longtime collaboration to explore all things silly. Picasso had a blue period; these guys have a poop period.

All kidding aside, the songs in this book — tunes like Home on the Range and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star — put potty training in a whole new light. You could go to the bookstore and get any number of tomes that exhort tiny ones to use the toilet like civilized adults. But what fun is that?

Better to go with this slim, colorful volume that includes kayaks, aliens and a giant elephant that (sadly) can’t fit into his potty chair. It’s a great way to encourage kids to use the bathroom like big people, but letting them stay silly for a little while longer.

An excerpt of this brand of potty humor, to be sung to the tune of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”:

“Go do poop in the toilet

Go do pee in the bowl

Don’t have to wait till the whole thing’s filled

Just go a little, we’ll all be so thrilled

So please poop poop poop when you feel it

Just sit and let pee-pee flow

You’re so big

And the potty is

Where all big kids go!”

School Library Journal tut-tuts disapprovingly: “The team that created Don’t Say That Word ! (2007) and Take Me Out of the Bathtub (2001, both S & S) is back with their most vulgar effort yet. Billed as a hilarious book to help toddlers learn how to ‘get up and go,’ this rude primer delivers 14 new lyrics, accompanied by equally tasteless pictures, to popular tunes.”
